INVASIVE PLANTS

Learn which invasive plant species are found on Saturna and what to do about them.

Eleanor Brouard-John and Hanna Thomson
Parks Canada Ecosystem Scientists

An invasive plant is a non-native species that has the potential to pose undesirable or detrimental impacts to ecological, cultural and economic systems. These plants spread quickly because they reproduce readily and have few natural controls to keep their populations in check. Some invasive plants can reduce the success of native plants by changing soil chemistry, light, or moisture regimes. A number of these species are growing with abandon on Saturna Island, on private, public, and park properties.

Please join Eleanor and Hanna and get to know the invasive land and aquatic plant species on Saturna, the impact of these species when they spread and the recommended best management practices. As a community, we can make a difference to the invasive plants in our environment. Let’s explore what we can do together.
