Using underwater listening stations to understand and protect marine ecosystems in coastal BC.
BEN HENDRICKS,
SOUNDSPACE ANALYTICS & BC HYDROPHONE NETWORK
Environmental events, marine life, and humans leave unique sonic signatures underwater—footprints that we can measure. Whales, in particular, rely on sound for survival and the development of culture. During this talk, we will listen to some of BC’s diverse ocean soundscapes, to whales, vessels, and other events, including recordings from SIMRES hydrophones in Boundary Pass. Ben will introduce the fundamental concepts for analyzing ocean sound with automated computer algorithms and give an overview about acoustic monitoring projects with coastal partners. These projects aim to bridge the gap between academic and community efforts, creating a coast-wide network of knowledge.
Ben is a multidisciplinary scientist and ocean enthusiast with a background in physics and mathematics. He founded SoundSpace Analytics to understand ocean environments through sound.
