The Science and Spirit of

Seaweed

Amanda Swinimer, BSc Dakini Tidal Wilds
Please join us for a talk with Amanda Swinimer, who’s deep love of the ocean brought her to the west coast of Vancouver Island where she started Dakini Tidal Wilds in 2003. For two decades, Amanda has been sustainably harvesting, by hand, wild, edible seaweeds. She shares her passion and reflects on the journey that led to her successful seaweed harvesting business and provides identification information, ecologically sound harvesting techniques, traditional medicinal application, and evidence-based health information for the varieties of seaweeds commonly found here. Not only are seaweeds nutrient-dense, but they are also a solution for combatting climate change due in part to the ability to absorb and sink massive amount of carbon dioxide in the deep ocean.
Amanda has written 2 books on seaweeds: The Science and Spirit of Seaweed. Discovering Food, Medicine and Purpose in the Kelp Forests of the Pacific Northwest, and The Science and Superpowers of Seaweed. A Guide for Kids.
